It is among the most familiar of birds in temperate regions. It is 19���23 cm (7.5���9.1 in) long, with a wingspan of 31���44 cm (12���17 in) and a weight of 60���100 g (2.1���3.5 oz). The plumage is shiny black, glossed purple or green, and spangled with white, particularly strongly so in winter.
